در RUP كل فرآيند توليد نرم‌افزار به چهار فاز اصلي تقسيم مي‌شود، كه هر فاز مي‌تواند شامل يك يا چند تكرار باشد. هر فاز شامل مسيري است كه بين دو گردنه (milestone) قرار دارد. اين چهار فاز عبارتند از:
