Even the old game as this betrays a lack of raster operators in the Radeon HD 5830. The new card is much slower than the HD 5850 when FSAA is turned off. Overclocking helps to narrow the gap, but that’s no consolation. The Radeon HD 5830 is not much better than the HD 5770. And being slower than the cheaper Radeon HD 4890 and GeForce GTX 275, it can hardly make an appealing buy.
Crysis

The Radeon HD 5830 is closer to the HD 5770 than to the HD 5850 in Crysis. Even when overclocked, the new card cannot catch up with the leader of this test. Moreover, the Radeon HD 5830 is no better than the Radeon HD 4890 here.
Unreal Tournament 3

Nvidia’s cards have always felt confident in Unreal Tournament 3, but we don’t like that the Radeon HD 5830 is inferior to the Radeon HD 4890. The HD 5830 is again closer to the HD 5770 rather than to the HD 5850.

Lost Planet is yet another game where we can see the same picture as above. The Radeon HD 5830 is even closer to the HD 5770, being a mere 1-2fps ahead.

The Radeon HD 5830 feels more confident in comparison with the Radeon HD 5770 in this game with rather low system requirements, but it is again slower than the Radeon HD 5850 and just equal to the Radeon HD 4890.

We have the same thing in BattleForge with the new card being slower than the Radeon HD 4890. It cannot catch up with the Radeon HD 5850 even when overclocked.

The Radeon HD 5830 is right between the HD 5770 and HD 5850, which seems to be good enough. But the Radeon HD 4890, which is going to be cheaper than the Radeon HD 5830, is almost as fast as the latter!

The Radeon HD 5830 is quite depressing in Wolfenstein and Resident Evil, being but slightly ahead of the Radeon HD 5770 and much slower than the Radeon HD 5850. The GeForce GTX 275 is just brilliant against such opposition!

The Radeon HD 5830 is better in this game, being somewhere in between the Radeon HD 5770 and HD 5850. However, the Radeon HD 4890 is not much slower than the newcomer and even as fast as the latter in the hardest test mode. We must confess that none of the cards can deliver a comfortable frame rate here (but the SunShafts scene is atypically complex for S.T.A.L.K.E.R.).

The Radeon HD 5830 might be called good if there were no Radeon HD 4890 and GeForce GTX 275. Unfortunately for the newcomer, these cards are present in our tests and on shop shelves.

The Radeon HD 5830 leaves the Radeon HD 5770 far behind in Left 4 Dead 2. It also competes with the Radeon HD 5850 in the easy mode but doesn’t look good against the Radeon HD 4890.

The lack of DirectX 11 support gives some advantage to the Radeon HD 4890 and GeForce GTX 275, yet the Radeon HD 5830 is again much slower than the HD 5850 and just a little better than the HD 5770.

This game doesn’t have anything new to tell us.
Now let’s analyze the results using summary diagrams.
The results of AMD’s Radeon HD 5850 1024MB, Radeon HD 5770 1024MB and Radeon HD 4890 1024MB cards are marked red in the diagrams. The Radeon HD 5830 1024MB (in two modes) is orange and the GeForce GTX 275 896MB is marked with Nvidia’s corporate green.
Now, let’s see what we have in benchmarks.
3DMark 2006

We have rather unexpected results in 3DMark 2006. The new Radeon HD 5830 is only competitive with the HD 5770 and previous-generation products, being inferior to the Radeon HD 4890. The Radeon HD 5850 is much faster than the newcomer and the latter cannot do anything about that even when overclocked. Take note that the overclocked Radeon HD 5830 has higher frequencies than the Radeon HD 5850 (875/5200 MHz) but cannot catch up with it.
3DMark Vantage

It’s better in 3DMark Vantage: the Radeon HD 5770 and HD 4890 are left behind together with the GeForce GTX 275, but the new card is still slower than the Radeon HD 5850 even though overclocking helps to narrow the gap somewhat.

You should disregard the leading Radeon HD 4890 and GeForce GTX 275 because they use the DirectX 10.1 renderer here. The other three cards use DirectX 11 and the gaps between them are identical.
