Performance
After a delay of six months, GeForce GTX480 is in a hardly enviable situation, since, as ever, long periods of waiting increase user expectations as well. Besides that, Nvidia isn’t in the most ideal of situations, as a lacking yield enforces a higher market price, and chip complexity inevitably draws high amounts of power. All in all, after all our extensive testing, we have to say that we really were expecting more. Realistically, GeForce GTX480 is fast and quite a bit faster than Radeon HD 5870 in certain situations. However, the power consumption is indeed huge, and the indicated final price on the market is at least 100€ higher than the one HD 5870 is going for. For example, while most games see a difference of 20% in these cards’ performance, Batman: Arkham Asylum sees GTX480 almost 50% faster than HD 5870.
Metro 2033 showed a major difference in performance as well, which we find very interesting, since the DirectX 11 implementation makes the game extremely demanding, and it was only GTX480 which provided a barely playable experience, even at lower resolutions. We must point out that we are not quite sure that the demo version of DiRT 2 actually utilizes DirectX 11, so the results in the final version of the game might be lower than in the demo. In transcoding video material, GF100 is noticeably faster than Cypress, with the difference going almost up to 30%. All in all, performance is very good and we really cannot file any complaints in that department, but half a year of delay simply made any sort of rapture impossible. Another lurking problem is that the high price of the card is probably here to stay, due to the still problematic yield

Recommendation?
Nvidia has a few arguments on their size, which is certain to provide them with adherents and a group of people who have been waiting patiently for Nvidia to come up with an adequate answer to HD 5870 will be buying this card. Those people are likely those who consider CUDA as one of the prominent features of the new card, and GTX480 is practically their only choice in that respect, a fact which is reinforced by drastic improvements in CUDA performance in every way compared to previous generations. Raytracing has also seen significant performance improvements. On the other hand, as ordinary gamers are presented with many requirements, including a great PSU, a spacious and well-cooled casing and, of course, a deep pocket, it wouldn’t come as a surprise if they turn elsewhere when shopping for their latest graphics card, or wait for the 100€ cheaper GTX470 to appear. The sale starts on April 12th, and Nvidia promises initial availability of tens of thousands of units.

MediaShow Espresso 5
Converting video material from one format to another, in order to adjust it to the capabilities of a certain device, seems to be becoming more and more popular as time goes by. The author of these lines has been using this program on an everyday basis, in order to transfer video material to PS3, iPod touch, notebook or another desktop PC. There was a time when we had to rely on the power of our CPU to execute these tasks, which usually had the most trouble coping with this type of workload. Besides, frequent conversions of Blu-Ray material and HD video in general can be very taxing on the performance of the PC. However, things moved in a better direction when Nvidia presented its G80 chip, the first one to bring CUDA features to the desktop segment, and with it, the first video conversion program able to use its possibilities, BadaBoom. In order to provide as relevant a comparison as possible, we’ve still opted for CyberLink’s MediaShow Espresso 5, which supports both GPU manufacturers, which makes it an excellent method for testing GPGPU card modes. The program is incredibly simple to use, which makes it a veritable enjoyment to work with it. We use 1080p Blu-Ray material with a bit-rate of 25 mbps as source.
The settings were as follows:
Playstation 3 – 1280x720 16:9 (m2ts format)
YouTube – 1280x720 16:9 (mp4 format)
iPod touch/iPhone – 640x430 16:9 (mp4 format)Nvidia 3D Vision Surround
Another of the new technologies to find their place in the list of additional features. Nvidia 3D Vision Surround is a partial response to ATI’s Eyefinity. By “partial”, we mean that, just like regular Radeon HD 5000 models, GTX480 and GTX470 also provide the option of connecting three monitors, in order to provide a panoramic view in games, but with a tiny catch – in order for 3D Vision Surround to work, the system has to comprise an SLI configuration, i.e. more than one graphics card. The option to connect six monitors is completely excluded, at least for the time being, and according to our findings, the grouping option is absent as well. Still, as an upside, Bezel Correction, implemented in ATI’s cards later on, is present to start with.
