حافظه های الکترونیکی در انواع گوناگون و برای مصارف مختلف ساخته شده اند . حافظه های فلش به دلیل سرعت بالای آنها در ثبت اطلاعات و همچنین استفاده فوق العاده آسان بسیار پر فروش و پر طرف دار می باشند . شیوه ذخیره اطلاعات در این نوع از حافظه بسیار شبیه به ذخیره اطلاعات در RAM می باشد . در حقیقت حافظه های فلش در نحوه فعالیت مشابه یک منبع ذخیره اطلاعات ثابت عمل می کند . به این معنی که در آنها هیچ قطعه متحرکی به کار نرفته و تمام کارها توسط مدارات الکترونیکی انجام می شود .امروزه این فن آوری ، آنقدر سریع توسعه می یابد که تا چند سال دیگر قادر به ذخیره اطلاعات معادل 64 گیگا بایت در فضائی به اندازه یک سانتی متر مربع هستیم . هم اکنون نیز این حافظه ها در ابعاد بسیار کوچک در ظرفیت های گوناگون در دسترس همه قرار دارد .
رشد تكنولوژي سبب شده تا انسان در برآورده كردن كوچك ترين نيازهاي روزمره خود از انواع رايانه ها و ابزارآلات پردازنده اطلاعات كمك بگيرد. اين موضوع در طي ساليان، منجر به پراكنده شدن اين دستگاه ها در تمامي نقاط جهان شده است. منازل، ادارات و ديگر مراكز خرد و كلان كسب و كار همگي مجهز به انواع رايانه شده اند و كاربران به اين وسيله ضمن افزودن بر سرعت و دقت، كارآمدي قابل توجهي را در مشاغل خود ايجاد كرده اند. در اين ميان در كنار پردازش اطلاعات، انتقال آن ها نيز مطرح مي شود. درخصوص اهميت اين موضوع مي توان گفت كه حتي پديده اي به نام اينترنت، فقط و فقط به منظور تسهيل تبادل و انتقال اطلاعات به راه افتاده است.
حافظه های الکترونیکی با اهداف متفاوت و به اشکال گوناگون تاکنون طراحی و عرضه شده اند.
حافظه فلش ، یک نمونه از حافظه های الکترونیکی بوده که برای ذخیره سازی آسان و سریع اطلاعات در دستگاههائی نظیر : دوربین های دیجیتال ، کنسول بازیهای کامپیوتری و ... استفاده می گردد. حافظه فلش اغلب مشابه یک هارد استفاده می گردد تا حافظه اصلی .
فلش درایورها از نوع USB یا اصطلاحا USB Flash Drive کاربرد های وسیعی پیدا کرده اند و استقبال از این حافظه ها زیاد می باشد و یکی از ابزارهای الکترونیکی که در طرح ها و شکل های مختلف برای فروش بیشتر به بازار ارائه می شود همین فلش درایورها می باشند، حالا هم فلش درایورهایی با شکلهای عروسکی ، فانتزی، خوردنی مثل : ساندویچ ، پیتزا ،همبرگر ، هات داگ ، نان و .... تولید شده و طرفداران زیادی پیدا کرده اند!
